Lusaka, Zambia – musician Jamaika Zed, whose real name is Jackson Chikonde, has been charged and arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) for alleged drug trafficking. The 31-year-old artist, a resident of Rhodespark in Lusaka, was found in possession of 43 sachets of cannabis weighing 84.65 grammes and 13 bottles of codeine, substances classified as illegal under Zambian law.
The DEC, in a statement released on Wednesday, 29th January. Revealed that Chikonde is currently detained in lawful custody, awaiting judicial proceedings. The commission also highlighted concerns over the content of his widely publicised music videos. Accusing him of daring law enforcement agencies and inciting the public to engage in activities that violate national laws.
“His music videos have been carrying content that challenges law enforcement and encourages unlawful behaviour among citizens,” the DEC stated. The case has also brought attention to the ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking in Zambia.
The Drug Enforcement Commission has intensified its efforts to curb the spread of illegal substances. And Chikonde’s arrest is seen as part of this broader crackdown. For now, Jamaika Zed is arrested and remains in custody, as a consequences of flouting national laws.
