Born “Brian Mumba Kasoka Bwembya” on November 12, B Flow, is a Zambian, multi-award-winning Dancehall/Hip-Hop Artist, Media Entrepreneur, Humanitarian, Social Justice Advocate, Part Time Radio Presenter, Peer Educator and Founder of Music for Change Initiative. The stage name B Flow was inspired by numerous praises from people who loved his ‘flows’ during singing competitions in his teenage years. His musical journey dates as far back as the age of 10 when his late mother Mirriam Mulenga Byrne introduced him to reggae music.
B Flow rose to fame in 2008 when he released the hit single ‘Mpu Mpu Mpu’ which became the title track of his first album featuring hit songs like Bubblegum Lover, Umoyo Wanga, Energizer and Mosikito. In 2010, he recorded ‘Double Trouble’, a collaboration album with the late P-Jay. In 2011 he released his second album titled ‘No More Kawilo’. He rose to prominence in 2013 when he released his third album ‘Voiceless Woman’ which saw him receiving local and international accolades. Bwembya is now well known for advocating against gender-based violence, political violence and HIV/AIDS.
According to a 2015 publication by America’s National Public Radio (NPR), Brian “B Flow” Bwembya used to make music for lovers, donning shades and gold chains in singing and music videos. But, he began rethinking what he wanted to say in his music. He says, a lot of hip-hop and dancehall music mostly just objectify women. Because of that trend, B’flow didn’t want to “promote anything that describes a woman as a sex object. The launch of his 2016 ‘Dear Mama’ album was powered by the United States government through the embassy which saw him being the first African musician to be endorsed by a sitting U.S President.
While in the US, B’Flow studied Civic Leadership at New York’s Wagner College where he was honored as a Wagner International Associate and in November 2016, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in New York named B’flow as one of the world’s 16 voices of activism against gender-based violence. Until recently, B’Flow has served as Chairperson for the HIV/AIDS and Social Commentary (HASC), committee of the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM), Global Ambassador of AIDS Healthcare Foundation(AHF) an HIV/AIDS advocacy organization whose headquarters are in Los Angeles, USA. He is also an Ambassador for OXFAM’s I Care “About Her” campaign and BBC Media Action’s ‘Tikambe (Natulande)’ project. In 2018, B’Flow became Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS Male Engagement campaign and World Vision’s ‘Every Hour Matters’ campaign.
